Find SF Planning and permit resources, verify the property context and prepare design questions.

Start with the official project context

SF Planning’s ADU page describes project types and program routes and links to application resources. Confirm the actual property jurisdiction first; a ZIP Code is only a research starting point. This is a preparation guide, not verification of a parcel or a promise of ZZA service coverage.

Make questions specific to existing conditions

List the housing type, known existing units, proposed work location, current use and available drawings. If occupants or existing uses may be affected, flag the issue for the appropriate authority rather than assuming permission from a general article.

Separate design questions from permit decisions

Discuss space goals and preparation first, then check application requirements through Planning’s permit resources. Requirements can change; this page does not determine a parcel’s allowed size, unit count or approval time. Begin an inquiry with ZIP Code and goals, adding further information as needed.

Separate a State ADU from other home additions

SF Planning’s September 2026 State ADU bulletin identifies zoning, existing units, historic resources and distinct ADU pathways. Qualifying State ADUs use ministerial review; unrelated work on the primary home still needs its applicable review. Check the Property Information Map and gather proposed location, existing uses and plans. Resolve differences between a local summary and state law with the authority before submission.
