ADU, addition or garage conversion: start with the space you need

Compare independent living, more space in the main home and garage conversion before a design consultation.

Start with the intended use

Do you want independent living for family, or another bedroom, study or larger kitchen in the main home? Describe the occupants, entrance, cooking and daily activities first. An ADU is a dwelling unit; an addition does not necessarily create one, and a garage conversion is not automatically an approved ADU.

Compare three practical trade-offs

For an independent space, discuss access, privacy and connection to the household. For an addition, focus on how old and new rooms meet. For a garage conversion, document existing conditions, daylight, access and changes to its current use. Treat these as design questions, not evidence that one option is cheaper, faster or permitted.

Prepare for a useful conversation

Prepare the ZIP Code, existing and desired layout, intended use, budget inclusions and the availability of plans. JADU is a distinct policy category; do not apply the label merely because a space is attached to the home. Confirm the project type and permit route for the actual property.
